Medicare to start new mail-order program for diabetic supplies July 1

If you’re a Medicare beneficiary who uses diabetic testing supplies, there’s an important change coming up that you should know about and plan for.

Beginning July 1, Medicare will begin using a national mail-order program for beneficiaries who want to have their diabetic testing supplies delivered directly to their home. The program will use only certain suppliers that have contracts with Medicare to sell the supplies for a set price.

We’ve all heard news reports about unsuspecting folks who gave out personal information to someone pretending to be from their bank — or even a Medicare prescription drug program — only to find out soon after that they’d been scammed and their bank accounts emptied. Sometimes the scammers aren’t targeting individuals at all, but instead use the information they get to file false claims with Medicare — charging the government for health care services or equipment they never provided. This kind of fraud costs Medicare billions of dollars every year. We’d all like to think we could never be taken in like that. But how confident are you, really, that you could spot a scammer in time?
